I put this picture in to try to show that the ball is not frozen to the long rail, but a little bit off of it, with its edge lined up with the point of the corner pocket (Figure 1). Also place the wall of balls on the long centerline, frozen to the short rail (maybe start with 4 and work your way up), and the hanging ball in the opposite corner pocket. I place the cue ball at 3 1/2 diamonds from the short rail so its leading edge is on the long centerline of the table.
Hit the first object ball right of full, maybe about 75%, with maximum follow and a touch of right english. You don't need to overpower this shot, just a smooth firm stroke will take it around. If the cue ball doesn't get around the wall of balls, hit the object ball just a bit fuller. If the cue ball's not bouncing far enough out, hit it thinner and maybe add a bit more pop in your stroke.
